Batteries Not Included is made from the GE Tote-a-Tune, a toy keyboard with a little built-in speaker and big clacky keys. The speaker distorts with some notes breaking up while others stay clean, and the four voices (flute, horn, brass, and reed) sound nothing like their names but each carries its own odd charm. Every key release was sampled, with the note-off most noticeable on the flute setting, adding extra character.
The library includes controls for cassette saturation and a low pass filter. There is also a special patch of evolving swells created from the keyboard’s temperamental volume slider, using all four sounds. The result is lo fi, wobbly, and expressive, great for moments when you want a toy keyboard that feels alive in unexpected ways.
